"Grant Anaicut," also known as "Kallanai," is one of Trichy's most famous and oldest dams, and a popular meeting place for friends and family.
It is located 12 miles [20 km] from the Cauvery River, between the districts of Thanjavur and Trichy. The Great Karikalan Cholan built the Kallanai dam in the 2nd Century AD, about 2000 years ago, and the dam was rebuilt by the English in the 19th century.
The main objective of the dam was to increase irrigation water in the lower reaches of the river while changing the flow of large amounts of water from the Cauvery district to the county of Collidam.
KALLANAI DAM HIGHLIGHTS
The height of the Dam is about 5.4 meters and its height is 1,079 feet.
It can store up to 15.4 cubic meters of water (i.e. 15400000000 liters).
It can irrigate up to 69,000 hectares of land, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was able to irrigate more than a million hectares of land.
The Kallanai Dam crosses the Cauvery River into 4 water channels called the Kollidam River, the Vennaru River, the Puthu River, and the Cauvery River.
WHY IS THE KALLANAI DAM FAMOUS?
Kallanai is also known for its beautiful picnic area. One of the best places to visit and photographers love this place. Not just photographers but also some food lovers. Fried fish near the Dam will be wet in the mouth and you can buy them at an affordable cost. You do not have to worry about where you will park your car, it has a large parking lot with a token system and you can park there safely. People can bathe in the river but safety is a must because the water will flow faster especially in November and December.
If you want to spend the whole day somewhere you can choose Kallanai Dam which will make your day memorable. Kallanai Dam, however Trichy also has many tourist attractions to visit such as Srirangam Temple, Samayapuram Temple, Rockfort Temple, Butterfly Park, and St Lourdes Church. A new study reveals that Tamilnadu is a major tourist destination in India.
Connectivity:
From Sarkarpalayam village, one can take the Sarkarpalayam-Kalanai road and 1.5 km after reaching the village of Togur, in Kallanai Dam. Taxis can be rented at Tiruchirapalli.
Flights:
The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli airport about 13 kilometers from the dam site.
Trains:
The nearest railway station is located at Lalgudi Junction railway station which is 4 km from Kallanai Dam.

Kallanai Dam is 45.3 Kms (1 hour and 12 minutes) from the old Thanjavur bus station, 51.6 Kms (1 hour) from the new Thanjavur bus station, 19.5 Kms (25 Minutes) from Tiruchirappalli .
