KALLANAI DAM,TRICHY

MAP!

"Grant Anaicut," also known as "Kallanai," is one of Trichy's most famous and oldest dams, and a popular meeting place for friends and family.

It is located 12 miles [20 km] from the Cauvery River, between the districts of Thanjavur and Trichy. The Great Karikalan Cholan built the Kallanai dam in the 2nd Century AD, about 2000 years ago, and the dam was rebuilt by the English in the 19th century.

The main objective of the dam was to increase irrigation water in the lower reaches of the river while changing the flow of large amounts of water from the Cauvery district to the county of Collidam.

KALLANAI DAM HIGHLIGHTS

The height of the Dam is about 5.4 meters and its height is 1,079 feet.

It can store up to 15.4 cubic meters of water (i.e. 15400000000 liters).

It can irrigate up to 69,000 hectares of land, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was able to irrigate more than a million hectares of land.

The Kallanai Dam crosses the Cauvery River into 4 water channels called the Kollidam River, the Vennaru River, the Puthu River, and the Cauvery River.
